I fell asleep, not a good habit to say that you will take a power nap late at night but really one is sleeping throughout. Anyways, I started my class in Sustainable Fashion and was inspired by nature..
I didn't realize that there was a parallel between the environmentalist, food and now fashion. I will elaborate next time. But one point to make is natural dyes come from nature. One of the classmates shared their experience from a natural dye making class. One of the exercise was to bring in used skins of avocados, pomegranate, she used blueberries and did you know onion skins can give off a nice pink or yellow? Made me want to take a natural dye class.
Tues May 29, 2012 11:00pm- Day 6
Section 2 Patterns: Item 6- p76 Multi-Sided Platforms
p76-p77 - "Multi-Sided Platforms brings together two or more distinct but interdependent groups of customers. Such platforms are of value to one group of customers only if the other groups of customers are also present. The platform creates value by facilitating interactions between the different groups. A multi-sided platform grows in value to the extent that it attracts more user, a phenomenon known as the network effect. "
p78-p79- It is an interesting piece to read this section, to quickly paraphrase this, they give examples of "Visa credit card, Microsoft Windows operating system, the Financial Times, Google, the Wii game console, and Facebook are successful multi-sided platforms." Sometimes you have to give something free to attract a customer base. "One difficulty multi-sided platform operator face is understanding which side to subsidize and how to price correctly to attract customers."
one example is "Metro, the free daily newspaper," give newspaper away for free to attract a large readership and get's it revenue by advertisement. Another example is "Microsoft, gave its Windows software development kit (SDK) away for free to encourage development of new applications for its operating systems. The larger number of applications attracts more users to the Windows platform and increased Microsoft's revenues.

There is absolutely no excuses... Just go for it.... Keep going...
They call it bootcamp for a reason....
If you don't motivate yourself, who will?
There is a saying, "If not you, then who?"
"If not now, then when."?
Mon May 28, 2012 11:00pm- Day 5
Section 2 Patterns: Item 5- p66 The Long Tail
p66-p67- Introduction of the concept of "Long Tail Business Models"
"Long Tail Business Models are about selling less of more: They focus on offering a large number of niche products, each of which sells relatively infrequently..."
p68-p69 - Shows a visual of what this means. They use example of Netflix and e-bay how Netflix "moved toward licensing a large number of niche movies. While each niche movie is rented relatively infrequently, aggregated revenue form Netflix's vast niche film catalog rivals that from rental of blockbuster movies."
"The success of online auction site eBay is based on a huge army of auctioneers selling and buying small quantities of "non-hit" items."
p70-p71- Gives an example of The Transformation of the Book Publishing Industry.
From the hassle of getting approved and selected to print, www.lulu.com enable anyone to publish and allow books to be printed after actual orders have been placed.
p72-p73- Use an example with LEGO's New Long Tail
"LEGO took a step beyond mass customization by entering Long Tail territory. In addition to helping users design their own LEGO sets, LEGO Factory now sells user-designed sets online...Today this aspect of LEGO's business accounts for only a small portions of total revenue, but it is a first step towards implementing a Long Tail model as a complement- or even alternative- to a traditional mass-market model."
p73-p74 - Here is a visual about "Niche" everything...
